How To Calculate Number Of Bricks, Cement And Sand For Brickwork?

Brickwork is a common construction technique used in many countries. It involves laying bricks one on top of the other using cement mortar as an adhesive. The strength of brickwork depends on several factors, including the bond strength between the bricks, the thickness of the cement mortar, the quality of the bricks used, and proper curing of water.

In this blog post, we will learn how to calculate the number of bricks, cement, and sand required for brickwork.

Standard Size of Brick

The standard size of a brick is 190 x 90 x 90 mm. The thickness of cement mortar used in brickwork is 10 mm.

Volume of One Brick Without Mortar

The volume of a single brick without mortar is 0.19 x 0.09 x 0.09 = 0.001539 cubic meters.

Volume of Brick With Mortar

The volume of a single brick with mortar is 0.20 x 0.1 x 0.1 = 0.002 cubic meters.

Number of Bricks Required

The number of bricks required for brickwork can be calculated using the following formula:

Number of Bricks = Volume of Wall / Volume of Brick with Mortar

Assuming that the wall size is 1 meter cube, we can calculate the number of bricks required as follows:

Number of Bricks = 1 / 0.002 = 500 bricks.

Quantity of Mortar Required

The quantity of mortar required for brickwork can be calculated using the following formula:

Quantity of Mortar = Volume of Wall – (Volume of Brick Without Mortar x Number of Bricks Required)

Assuming that the wall size is 1 meter cube, we can calculate the quantity of mortar required as follows:

Quantity of Mortar = 1 – (0.001539 x 500) = 0.2305 cubic meters (In Wet condition)

The volume we calculated is when the cement mortar is wet, so we need 0.2305 cubic meters of mixed cement mortar (after adding water).

To get the dry volume, we have to multiply by 33%, which accounts for the extra space sand takes up.

Dry volume of a mortar = 0.2305 cum x 1.3

= 0.306565 cum

Quantity of Cement Required

The quantity of cement required for brickwork can be calculated using the following formula:

Quantity of Cement = Volume of Mortar x (Ratio of Cement / Sum of Ratio)

Cement

Assuming that we are using a ratio of 1:6 (one part cement to six parts sand), we can calculate the quantity of cement required as follows:

Quantity of Cement = 0.306565 x (1/7) = 0.043795 cubic meters or 1.54640145 cubic feet or 63 kilograms or 1.26 bags

(1 bag cement= 50 kg)

Quantity of Sand Required

The quantity of sand required for brickwork can be calculated using the following formula:

Quantity of Sand = Volume of Mortar x (Ratio of Sand / Sum of Ratio

River Sand

Assuming that we are using a ratio of 1:6 (one part cement to six parts sand), we can calculate the quantity of sand required as follows:

Quantity of Sand = 0.306565 x (6/7) = 0.26277 cubic meters or 9.2784087 cubic feet.
